What a Diet Break Actually Buys You
A planned week at maintenance is the standard advice for a long cut. The trial that made it popular was run on men with obesity, and the trials run on lifters found something different.

Twelve weeks into a cut, someone will tell you to take a diet break. Eat at maintenance for a week, let your metabolism recover, then get back into the deficit and the fat will come off faster than it was.
The first part of that is good advice. The last part is where it gets complicated, because the answer turns out to depend quite a lot on who is asking.
What a diet break is
A diet break is a planned stretch at maintenance calories in the middle of a fat-loss phase. Usually one to two weeks. You raise calories to your best maintenance estimate, mostly by adding carbs, keep protein and training where they were, then go back into the deficit.
Two things it is not. It is not the end of the diet. Coming off a diet properly is a separate process with a different goal, and a break is a pause inside the diet rather than the exit from it. It is also not quite a refeed. A refeed is a one or two day version on a shorter timescale. The individual trials below tested the longer breaks, though the meta-analysis further down pooled shorter refeed protocols too, so treat these as neighboring questions rather than separate ones.
The study everyone quotes
Almost every version of this advice traces back to one trial. In 2018, Byrne and colleagues randomized 51 men with obesity to 16 weeks of energy restriction, delivered either continuously or intermittently. Forty-seven started the intervention. The intermittent group ran eight two-week blocks of restriction alternating with seven two-week blocks at energy balance, which stretched the same dose of dieting across 30 weeks.
The intermittent group lost more weight and more fat, did not lose more fat-free mass, and showed less of a drop in resting energy expenditure. Six months later it remained further below baseline, although the regain itself did not differ significantly between the groups (3.5 kg in the intermittent group against 5.9 kg in the continuous one, p = 0.24), and only 28 of the men were still being measured by then. That is a genuinely strong result on the active dieting phase, and it is where the popular version of the advice comes from.
Note the population though. Men with obesity, average BMI around 34, with a lot of fat to lose. Hold that thought, because it turns out to be the part that matters.
Then they tried it on lifters
The ICECAP trial ran the same idea on a very different group. Peos and colleagues (2021) took 61 resistance-trained adults, 32 of them women, averaging 25.5 percent body fat. One group ran four three-week blocks of moderate restriction with three one-week blocks at energy balance in between, 15 weeks in total. The other ran 12 straight weeks of the same moderate restriction.
The intermittent group did not finish with lower fat mass, lower body weight, or more fat-free mass. There was no difference in strength, muscle endurance, or resting energy expenditure either. What did differ was appetite: the intermittent group reported lower hunger, less desire to eat, and greater satisfaction.
A second trial landed in the same place. Siedler and colleagues (2023) ran 38 resistance-trained women through either six weeks of continuous 25 percent restriction or the same restriction with a week at energy balance dropped in after weeks two and four. Both groups trained and both ate 1.8 g/kg of protein. Fat mass fell about 1.2 kg in each, with no meaningful difference between them. Neither group saw a real change in fat-free mass. Resting metabolic rate rose slightly in both, by roughly 12 calories a day, with no separation between groups.
Their conclusion is worth taking as written: diet breaks did not improve body composition or metabolic rate against continuous restriction over six weeks, but can be used by people who want a short break from dieting without fear of regaining fat.
Why those two answers don't actually disagree
In 2024, Poon and colleagues pooled 12 randomized trials covering 881 people. Both approaches improved body mass, fat mass, BMI, body fat percentage and waist circumference, with no significant difference between them on any of it. Resting metabolic rate was a different story. It fell significantly only in the continuous groups, and the compensatory drop was smaller when breaks were used, by a mean difference of about 47 calories a day (95% CI 21 to 74).
The part that lines up with everything above is their subgroup analysis. That protection of resting metabolic rate was larger in people with overweight or obesity than in resistance-trained people. A correction was later published to the figure showing that subgroup, so treat it as a direction rather than a precise number.
One plausible explanation, and it is an explanation rather than something the subgroup analysis demonstrates: a break can only protect metabolic adaptation that exists. Someone deep into a long, aggressive deficit has accumulated a lot of it, so there is a lot for the break to blunt. A lifter at 25 percent body fat running a moderate deficit for 12 weeks has not accumulated much, so the break has less work to do. Same intervention, different amount of problem to solve. That reading fits the data, but the trials were not designed to test the mechanism.
So what does the week actually do?
The ICECAP group measured this directly. In a pre-specified secondary analysis, 26 of the athletes were tested before and after a single one-week break taken after 12 weeks of restriction, with calories raised to predicted maintenance mostly through carbohydrate.
Fat mass did not change significantly, which is the reassuring part. Body weight rose 0.6 kg and fat-free mass rose 0.7 kg, most of which is likely glycogen and the water stored alongside it rather than new tissue in a week. Resting energy expenditure went from about 7,000 to 7,200 kJ per day. And leg muscle endurance improved: the quadriceps and hamstrings did more total work in a maximum-effort 25-rep set. Arm endurance did not change.
So for a trained person, a week at maintenance buys refilled glycogen, a small bump in resting expenditure, better leg endurance going back in, and a real reduction in hunger. It does not buy faster fat loss. Those are still good things to buy.
When to take one
The trigger is adherence, not arithmetic. Take a break when the diet is the thing that is failing, which usually shows up in one of four ways.
You are past 10 to 12 weeks of continuous restriction. Hunger, sleep quality or training quality has started sliding. The scale has stalled and you have already worked through the usual suspects, in which case a break also hands you a cleaner maintenance estimate to restart from. Or you have a week where holding a deficit was never going to happen anyway, like a holiday or a work trip, and making it deliberate beats letting it happen to you.
How to run it
Raise calories to your best estimate of maintenance rather than eating without a number. If you are not sure where that sits, the maintenance phase is worth reading first, and the macro calculator gives you a starting point to adjust from rather than a figure to obey.
Add the calories as carbohydrate. That is what the trials did, and it is what refills glycogen. Keep protein exactly where it was, at the same target you were already hitting. Keep training as normal. Run it for one to two weeks, then go back into the deficit at the same rate you were using before, not a steeper one to make up for the pause.
Expect the scale to go up over the week. A temporary increase is normal, but its size and timing vary: the athlete trial above averaged 0.6 kg, and that is a mean from one group of trained adults rather than a range you should hold yourself to. What it reflects is food volume, water and glycogen rather than fat. Watching it happen without panicking is most of the skill.
The short version
If you carry a lot of fat and you are deep into a long deficit, breaks protect resting metabolic rate, and in the one trial that followed people up afterwards the break group was still further below its starting weight six months on, though the difference in regain was not statistically significant. If you are a reasonably lean person lifting through a moderate deficit, a diet break will not make the fat come off faster, and three separate lines of evidence agree on that.
Take one anyway when the diet is grinding you down. Lower hunger, a full glycogen tank, better legs on the way back in, and a week of not fighting your own appetite is a good enough reason on its own. Just take it because you need the break, not because you have been told it is a shortcut.
